Toy Story (1995) – Tom Hanks

To infinity and beyond — Tom Hanks gives Woody, a pull-string cowboy, a voice full of loyalty, jealousy and love, and helps change animation forever.

Released in 1995, Toy Story was the first feature film made entirely with computer animation, from Pixar. Hanks voices Woody, the favourite toy of a boy named Andy, who feels threatened when a new space ranger toy, Buzz Lightyear, arrives.

Woody could have been simply jealous, but Hanks gives him warmth and insecurity in equal measure. His voice carries the whole film: the jokes, the fear of being replaced, and the friendship that grows between two very different toys.

It is a signature role even though Hanks never appears on screen, because Woody became one of the most beloved characters in family film, and Hanks returned to the role in the sequels that followed.
