In Bad Day at Black Rock (1955), Spencer Tracy plays John J. Macreedy, a one-armed stranger who arrives by train in a small desert town and asks questions the townspeople would rather not answer. Directed by John Sturges, the film is a taut western thriller about prejudice, guilt, and a wartime secret.
Tracy carries the film almost entirely on presence. Macreedy says little, but his calm persistence makes the town’s hostility feel more threatening with every scene. The performance earned Tracy another Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, and it showed that, even in his fifties, he could anchor a suspense film without raising his voice.
