The recording in context

“I Just Fall in Love Again,” written by Steve Dorff, Larry Herbstritt, Harry Lloyd and Gloria Sklerov, was Anne Murray’s 1979 chart-topper on the country charts and a top-ten pop hit. It’s a song about the renewability of love — falling not once, but again and again, with the same person — and Murray sings it with the quiet wonder of someone watching a miracle repeat itself.

Listen closely

Notice the buoyancy — the record has a gentle lift, like a held breath released. A rolling piano figure, a soft rhythm section, and Murray’s voice floating over it all with complete ease. She makes falling in love sound less like a risk and more like a tide: inevitable, welcome, returning on schedule.

Listen to the chorus bloom: the melody opens up like a window, and her phrasing stays perfectly centered — never swooning, never hurried. There’s a deep contentment in this performance, the sound of an artist and a song in complete agreement about what love feels like when it works. It’s Murray’s gift: making the extraordinary sound like the most natural thing in the world.

“I Just Fall in Love Again” is Murray’s ode to love’s encore — and she sings every repeat like the first time.
