Autumn Sonata (1978) was Ingrid Bergman’s final film, and one of her finest, as Charlotte Andergast, a celebrated pianist who visits her daughter after years apart.
Directed by Ingmar Bergman, the film is a chamber drama about a mother and daughter, played by Liv Ullmann, confronting old wounds. Bergman played Charlotte with a mixture of charm, selfishness and pain, and her scenes with Ullmann are among the most powerful in either actress’s career.
Bergman was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for the role. Autumn Sonata remains a fitting farewell, a performance of great depth from an actress at the end of a remarkable career.
