I Love Lucy (TV, 1951-1957) – Lucille Ball

This is a television work, not a film. I Love Lucy was the television series that made Lucille Ball a household name around the world.

I Love Lucy was a television series that ran from 1951 to 1957 on CBS. Lucille Ball played Lucy Ricardo, a housewife in New York who dreamed of a career in show business, while her husband Ricky Ricardo, played by Desi Arnaz, was a bandleader at the Tropicana nightclub. Vivian Vance and William Frawley played their neighbours and friends, Ethel and Fred Mertz.

The series was filmed before a live studio audience, using three cameras, a method that became standard for television comedy. Its episodes included some of the most famous scenes in television history: Lucy working on a chocolate factory conveyor belt, Lucy stomping grapes in Italy, and Lucy giving birth to Little Ricky, in an episode broadcast on the same day, 19 January 1953, that Ball gave birth to her son Desi Arnaz Jr. in real life.

I Love Lucy was not only popular, it changed television. It was made by Desilu Productions, it was filmed in Hollywood rather than broadcast live from New York, and its reruns proved that a television series could have a life after its first broadcast. For Ball, Lucy Ricardo became her defining role, and the series remains the work for which she is best remembered.
