In Rio Grande (1950), John Wayne played Lieutenant Colonel Kirby Yorke, a cavalry commander on the Texas border who must deal with Apache raids and with the arrival of his estranged wife Kathleen, played by Maureen O’Hara, and his son Jeff, who has enlisted under a false name. Directed by John Ford, the film follows Yorke as duty, family and love collide.

Wayne and O’Hara gave the film its warmth and tension, and the story of a family reunited by war and by a shared sense of duty became one of Ford’s most popular westerns. Rio Grande completed Ford’s cavalry trilogy after Fort Apache and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon.

Rio Grande remains a signature Wayne role because Yorke was a father as well as a soldier, and because Wayne played both sides of that conflict with the same steady conviction.
