As Romeo in Baz Luhrmann’s dazzling modern Verona Beach, DiCaprio made Shakespeare feel urgent, romantic and heartbreakingly young.
Romeo + Juliet (1996) keeps Shakespeare’s language but sets it amid guns, neon and pop music. DiCaprio, opposite Claire Danes, plays Romeo as a dreamer whose intensity is never in doubt. The famous balcony scenes work because he treats the verse as natural speech.
The film introduced a new generation to Shakespeare and confirmed DiCaprio as a romantic lead with real acting weight. Its tragic ending still lands because he never softens Romeo’s impulsiveness or his devotion.
