As Billy Costigan, an undercover policeman infiltrating Boston’s criminal underworld, DiCaprio gave Martin Scorsese’s crime epic its nervous, beating heart.
The Departed (2006) is built on doubles and deception, and Billy is its most exposed figure: a man pretending to be a criminal while criminals pretend to be policemen around him. DiCaprio plays the strain in every scene, his quick temper and quicker intelligence both a survival tool and a liability.
The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and DiCaprio’s performance is central to why it still crackles. It is a portrait of a man who cannot rest, in a city that will not let him.
