In The Pirate (1948), Gene Kelly plays Serafin, a travelling actor who pretends to be the legendary pirate Macoco to win the heart of Manuela, played by Judy Garland, a young woman who dreams of adventure. Directed by Vincente Minnelli, the musical is a colourful fantasy about dreams, deception, and love.
Kelly and Garland dance together with infectious energy, and Kelly’s athletic choreography, including a famous sequence with a hoop and a donkey, shows his playful inventiveness. The film was not a hit on release, but it has since become a favourite among musical fans for its wit and its dancing.
