The Voice.

Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born on 9 August 1963 in Newark, New Jersey, and died on 11 February 2012 in Beverly Hills, California, aged 48. In between she became one of the best-selling musical performers of the 1980s and ’90s — a singer whose voice could carry a pop song, a gospel hymn and a movie ballad with the same power, and whose records set chart records that stood for decades.

The Biography

A musical family

Houston was the daughter of Emily (“Cissy”) Houston — whose vocal group, the Sweet Inspirations, sang backup for Aretha Franklin and other popular artists — and the cousin of singer Dionne Warwick. She began singing in church as a child, and sang backup and modelled as a teenager before Clive Davis signed her to Arista Records in 1983, when she was 19.

The debut and the record run

Her debut single, “You Give Good Love”, entered the Billboard Hot Black Singles chart on 9 March 1985. Her self-titled debut album, Whitney Houston, was released on 14 February 1985 and yielded three No. 1 singles in the United States: “Saving All My Love for You”, “How Will I Know” and “Greatest Love of All”, which became her signature song. It was the first album by a female recording artist to land three songs on top of the Billboard Hot 100, spent 14 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and remains the best-selling debut album by a solo artist. “Saving All My Love for You” won her first Grammy Award, for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Her second album, Whitney (June 1987), delivered four more No. 1 singles — “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)”, “Didn’t We Almost Have It All”, “So Emotional” and “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” — and made her the first female artist to enter the Billboard 200 album chart at No. 1. “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” won another Grammy. Across the two albums she charted seven consecutive No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hits, a record for any artist. In 1988 she recorded “One Moment in Time” for the Seoul Summer Olympics; it reached the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Her third album, I’m Your Baby Tonight (November 1990), moved toward a more contemporary R&B sound.

The Bodyguard

In 1992 Houston married singer Bobby Brown and made her motion-picture debut in The Bodyguard, co-starring with Kevin Costner. The film featured her rendition of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You”, which stayed at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 14 weeks and became the biggest-selling single by a female artist in history. The film’s soundtrack — with six Houston songs — became the biggest-selling motion picture soundtrack album of all time, with more than 45 million copies sold worldwide, and won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year; “I Will Always Love You” won Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Films, gospel and the comeback

Houston returned to the screen in Waiting to Exhale (1995); its soundtrack’s first single, her “Exhale (Shoop Shoop)”, topped the charts. In 1996 she starred in The Preacher’s Wife with Denzel Washington; its soundtrack became the best-selling gospel album of all time.

In 1998 she released My Love Is Your Love, her first studio album in eight years, praised by critics and the source of her sixth Grammy Award — for “It’s Not Right but It’s Okay”, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, at the 42nd Grammy Awards in February 2000. A month later she was named Female Artist of the Decade at the Soul Train Music Awards.

Her later studio albums were Just Whitney (2002) and One Wish: The Holiday Album (2003). Following her divorce from Bobby Brown in 2007, she returned to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with her final studio album, I Look to You (2009).

Death and legacy

Whitney Houston was found dead in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills on 11 February 2012, shortly before Clive Davis’s annual pre-Grammy Awards party. She was 48. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020, posthumously, in the Performer category; Alicia Keys inducted her, and her mother Cissy and her sister-in-law Pat Houston accepted on her behalf. In 2026 the Recording Academy honoured her posthumously with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
