A Place in the Sun (1951) – Elizabeth Taylor

As Angela Vickers, the beautiful society girl at the centre of George Stevens’ tragedy, Taylor showed a luminous maturity far beyond her years.

A Place in the Sun (1951), adapted from Theodore Dreiser’s novel An American Tragedy, follows George Eastman, played by Montgomery Clift, torn between a factory girl and the dazzling Angela. Taylor plays Angela not as a mere rival, but as a young woman genuinely in love, which makes the story’s outcome all the more heartbreaking.

The film won six Academy Awards, and Taylor’s performance is remembered as the moment a child star became a leading lady of the first rank.
