1983 · Behind the Songs
A first single with wings.

“Angel” was Anita Baker’s first charting single, released in 1983 from her debut album The Songstress. It did not storm the charts — it glided. Her smoky contralto floats over a sparse arrangement, all brushed drums and soft electric piano, and the effect is less a debut than an arrival: here, fully formed, is a voice unlike any other.
Listen closely and you can hear her jazz instincts already at work — the way she leans into a phrase a half-beat late, the way she lets a note decay instead of forcing it. The production stays out of her way, trusting the voice to carry the song. It was the right call.

“Angel” was the sound of a singer announcing exactly who she was. Three years later, Rapture would make that announcement heard around the world — but the wings were already on.
