“Giving You the Best That I Got” is the title track of Anita Baker’s 1988 album, and its premise is disarmingly simple: no holding back, no hedging — everything she has, offered freely. It topped the R&B chart, reached the pop Top 5, and brought her two more Grammys, but its real achievement is emotional: it makes total devotion sound reasonable.

The arrangement is classic Baker — stately piano, a rhythm that breathes, and a vocal that climbs to its big notes with the calm of someone stating a fact. She never oversings; she doesn’t need to. The promise does the heavy lifting.

In a genre that often equates love with drama, Baker offered something rarer: love as generosity. The best that she got — and it turns out that was plenty.
