“Easy” is a Sunday morning in song form. Written by Lionel Richie and released in 1977, it moves at the pace of someone with nowhere to be — a gentle guitar figure, a voice that never raises itself, and a lyric about taking life as it comes. It was the ballad that proved the Commodores could do tenderness as convincingly as funk.

The song’s secret is its restraint. Nothing is rushed, nothing is oversold, and the famous mood of calm feels earned rather than performed. It became one of the band’s signature songs and a staple of slow dances everywhere — the sound of a band confident enough to whisper.
