As Dom Cobb, a thief who steals secrets from dreams, DiCaprio anchored Christopher Nolan’s puzzle-box blockbuster in grief and guilt.
Inception (2010) is a film of layers, with dreams inside dreams, but Cobb’s story is simple: a man who cannot forgive himself for the death of his wife, played by Marion Cotillard, and who takes one last job in hope of returning home to his children. DiCaprio keeps that emotional thread clear even as the action grows more elaborate.
The film’s famous final shot, with a spinning top that may or may not fall, works because the audience cares less about the puzzle than about Cobb. That is DiCaprio’s achievement here: he makes a high-concept thriller feel human.
