1974 · Behind the Songs
A flirtation built around a phone number.

Nobody knows who Rikki was, and that is the point. “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number,” from Pretzel Logic (1974), is built around one of the great opening riffs in pop — actually borrowed, with permission, from Horace Silver’s jazz tune “Song for My Father” — and a plea that sounds romantic until you listen closely. Fagen’s narrator wants the number kept, but he never quite says why.

The song became the band’s biggest hit to that point, and its mystery became part of the appeal. Was Rikki a lover, a connection, a missed chance? The band never said. In the Steely Dan universe, the unanswered question is always more interesting than the answer, and this is their catchiest unanswered question.
