Mick Jones wrote “Should I Stay or Should I Go” about his own tangled love life, and you can hear the indecision in every bar. Released on Combat Rock in 1982, the song is built like a pub-rock stomp — simple, loud, and impossible not to shout along with. Strummer answers Jones’s English verses with Spanish backing vocals, turning a private dilemma into a call-and-response.

The song’s second life is the real story. Nearly a decade after its release, it went to number one in Britain on the back of a jeans commercial, introducing the Clash to a generation that had missed them the first time. It is now one of the most played rock songs of its era — a reminder that the simplest question is sometimes the hardest one, and the catchiest.
